Technology Is Easy to Miss

Technology was something I never really noticed or thought much about until I became an adult.

Then I started to realize how much technology shapes society. Ask your parents, grandparents, or elders what life looked like before the internet, smartphones, GPS, streaming, online banking, or instant communication. The internet you are reading this from is still a relatively new phenomenon in the long history of human life.

That is the strange thing about technology. It transforms our lives in ways we once would not have imagined, then eventually becomes normal enough that we stop seeing it.

Cars. Planes. Phones. TVs. Medical equipment. Manufacturing equipment. Computers. Sensors. Software. The tools around us were engineered, tested, made better, tested again, and improved through iteration. This is what humans do. We build something useful, learn from its flaws, and try to make the next version better.

Biology made me notice engineering

I became more interested in technology and engineering after I started studying biology.

Biology and engineering go hand in hand. The body is full of machinery at the cellular level. Pumps, channels, signals, feedback loops, energy systems, repair mechanisms, error correction, transport, timing, and structure. Life has been iterating for a long time, and the result is a system that can operate with incredible efficiency and surprisingly low error rates.

Once I saw biology that way, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and chemical engineering became more interesting to me too. They all seemed connected by the same deeper question: how do we improve the last iteration?

An engineered product and a biological system are not the same thing, but both force us to think about function, constraints, inputs, outputs, failure modes, and improvement. That lens changed how I saw the world.

We stop noticing the miraculous

We walk past innovation every day without blinking.

The phone in your pocket would have been almost unimaginable to many people not long ago. I remember teachers saying we needed to be good at math because we would not always have a calculator with us. Well, now most of us carry a powerful computer everywhere we go, and doing math is one of the least impressive things it can do.

That was only about twenty years ago.

What will the world look like in another twenty?

Pay attention. Look at emerging markets. Electric vehicles, renewable energy, battery technology, automation, robotics, biotechnology, and artificial intelligence are showing up in ways many people would not have predicted. Whatever your opinion is on any one of those topics is not the point. The point is that technology keeps arriving, and it keeps reorganizing what is possible.

Learn the tools

Technology becomes useful when we learn how and when to use it.

It is not enough to know that a tool exists. The valuable skill is understanding which product, system, or technology fits which situation. What problem does it solve? What are its limits? Where does it create risk? What does it replace? What does it make easier? What does it make possible?

This is how you make yourself more marketable in today's world.

We have access to more knowledge than any previous generation. Infinite information sits at our fingertips, yet many people refuse to use it. They stay ignorant not because information is unavailable, but because curiosity requires effort.

That is a choice.

Learn the tools. Test them. Ask what they can do. Ask what they cannot do. Learn enough to have an informed opinion instead of a recycled one.

That brings me to the next topic: artificial intelligence.
